BEHIND THE STREET CHILDRENS LIFE!
Street children are poor or homeless children who live on the streets of a city town, village, homeless youth are often called street kids or street child
Who is a boy or girl below the age of 18 years and who is in unoccupied wasteland or an area suitable for livelihood, without the supervision and protection of an adult.
According to our
statistics, the number of street children is more than 20 lakhs, Mumbai and
Kolkata are the cities with the highest number of street children. 10-20
percent of street children are homeless, in which 5 to 8 lakh children working
on the streets.
We keep seeing street
children day by day, from early morning till going to bed, they are seen near
the signals, near the bus stop, near the railway station. Some of them beg and
some of them do petty business.in India street children selling snacks and
drinks to bus passengers, selling small items such as balloons, selling newspapers
or flowers, begging, shining shoes, working in small hotels, working in road
side stalls or repair shops. Street children’s especially the older children
are also sometimes engaged in activities such as stealing, pick-pocketing, drug
peddling and prostitution.

Particularly in Mumbai most
of the children are illegally employed by hotels, restaurants, canteens, tea shops,
and eating places one of the most common economic activities done by children
is scavenging for recyclable materials such as plastic paper and metal.
Causes of street children
There are lots of causes for this problem, some are natural and others are man-made. Children have lost contact with their parents or families, which results the loss of the children in the streets. Some children are the offspring of prostitutes. Some families reject their children if there are handicapped. Some “respectable” parent disowned their own child because he/she is an outcome of an affair. Father becoming addicted to alcohol at home, their father or mother becoming stepfathers, running away from home, mother or father dying at an early age. Usually, street children are born from female headed households i.e. women who are unmarried or divorced become street children.
